How To Tie A Tie

Full Windsor Knot

The Windsor knot (or the Full Windsor), which owes its name to the Duke of Windsor, is a knot full of English class. The full Windsor is one of the most popular knots. We can note that it is larger than the other popular knot the Four-in-hand. When finished the Windsor knot has considerable volume and is best suited to wide-spaced collars (Italian collars for example) and to thin-fabric ties.

Full Windsor Knot Step 1
The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".
Full Windsor Knot Step 2
Bring the wide end "W" around and behind the narrow end "N".
Full Windsor Knot Step 3
Pull the wide end "W" through the loop.
Full Windsor Knot Step 4
Bring the wide end "W" around front, over the narrow end "N" from left to right.
Full Windsor Knot Step 5
bring the wide end "W" up and through the loop.
Full Windsor Knot Step 6
Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.
Full Windsor Knot Step 7
Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

Half Windsor Knot

The Half Windsor Knot, a modest version of the Windsor Knot, is a symmetrical and triangular tie knot that you can use with any dress shirt. It works best with somewhat wider ties made from light to medium fabrics.

Half Windsor Knot Step 1
The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N"
Half Windsor Knot Step 2
Bring the wide end "W" around and behind the narrow end "N". and Bring the wide end "W" up
Half Windsor Knot Step 3
Pull the wide end "W" through the loop.
Half Windsor Knot Step 4
Bring the wide end "W" around front, over the narrow end "N" from right to left.
Half Windsor Knot Step 5
Again, bring the wide end "W" up and through the loop.
Half Windsor Knot Step 6
Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.
Half Windsor Knot Step 7
Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

Four in Hand Knot

The Four in Hand Knot makes for a narrow, more discreet and slightly asymmetrical tie knot. It is best suited for a standard button-down dress shirt and works best with wide ties made from heavy fabrics.

Four in Hand Knot Step 1
The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".
Four in Hand Knot Step 2
Turn the wide end "W" back underneath the narrow end "N".
Four in Hand Knot Step 3
Continue by bringing the wide end "W" back over in front of the narrow end "N" again.
Four in Hand Knot Step 4
Pull the wide end "W" up and through the loop around your neck.
Four in Hand Knot Step 5
Hold the front of the knot loosely with your index finger and bring the wide end "W" down through the front knot.
Four in Hand Knot Step 6
Remove your finger and tighten the knot carefully to the collar by holding the narrow end "N" and sliding the knot up.

Bow Tie

The Bow Tie Knot is used to tie a bow tie and is worn to give you a formal and elegant appearance. A "black tie occasion" such as a wedding is an event that you would commonly wear a bow tie at, along with a tuxedo.

Bow Tie Step 1
The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".
Bow Tie Step 2
Bring the wide end "W" around and behind the narrow end "N".
Bow Tie Step 3
Pull the wide end "W" through the loop.
Bow Tie Step 4
Bring the wide end "W" around front, over the narrow end "N" from left to right.
Bow Tie Step 5
bring the wide end "W" up and through the loop.
Bow Tie Step 6
Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.
Bow Tie Step 7
Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.
