How To Tie A Tie

Full Windsor Knot

The Windsor knot (or the Full Windsor), which owes its name to the Duke of Windsor, is a knot full of English class. The full Windsor is one of the most popular knots. We can note that it is larger than the other popular knot the Four-in-hand. When finished the Windsor knot has considerable volume and is best suited to wide-spaced collars (Italian collars for example) and to thin-fabric ties.

Full Windsor Knot Step 1
Lay the tie around your neck so that the wide end of your tie hangs down about 6-7 inches longer than the narrow end. Cross the wide end over the narrow end.
Full Windsor Knot Step 2
Loop the necktie through the gap between neck and unfinished tie knot. Pull it all the way around and then back behind the narrow end.
Full Windsor Knot Step 3
Now do the same thing on the other side.
Full Windsor Knot Step 4
Wrap the wide end of the tie back over to the front.
Full Windsor Knot Step 5
Pull the wide end back through in between neck and unfinished knot. Don’t pull tight, but create a loop in front of the knot.
Full Windsor Knot Step 6
Pull the wide end of the tie through this loop.
Full Windsor Knot Step 7
Pull tight and give the knot a final adjustment. Thats it!

Half Windsor Knot

The Half Windsor Knot, a modest version of the Windsor Knot, is a symmetrical and triangular tie knot that you can use with any dress shirt. It works best with somewhat wider ties made from light to medium fabrics.

Half Windsor Knot Step 1
Flip up your collars, button the town button and lay the tie around your neck. The wide end of the tie should hang about 5-6 inches lower than the narrow and, and the inside of the tie should have your body.
Half Windsor Knot Step 2
Loop the wide end of the tie thorough the gap between neck and necktie.
Half Windsor Knot Step 3
Pull the wide end of the tie back over to the front. Pull it slightly tight. Then, take this end of the tie and wrap back behind the narrow end of the tie.
Half Windsor Knot Step 4
Wrap the wide end of the necktie back over the front of the narrow end. Don’t pull tight but create a loop at the front of the unfinished knot
Half Windsor Knot Step 5
Just like you did in step # 2, pull the wide end of the tie in between your collar and the tie.
Half Windsor Knot Step 6
Then, pull the wide end thorough the loop you created in step #4.
Half Windsor Knot Step 7
Give the half-Windsor knot a final adjustment and flip down your collars. Done!

Four in Hand Knot

The Four in Hand Knot makes for a narrow, more discreet and slightly asymmetrical tie knot. It is best suited for a standard button-down dress shirt and works best with wide ties made from heavy fabrics.

Four in Hand Knot Step 1
Flip up your collar, button down the top button, and lay the necktie around your neck so that the wide end of the tie hangs 5-6 inches lower than the narrow end. Make sure that the inseam of the tie faces you body.
Four in Hand Knot Step 2
Place the wide end of the necktie over the narrow end, and wrap around. Hold the narrow end down with your other hand.
Four in Hand Knot Step 3
Then, wrap the wide end over the narrow end. Don’t pull it tight, but create a loop at front of the unfinished tie knot.
Four in Hand Knot Step 4
Then, loop the wide end of the tie through the gap between unfinished tie knot and your collar.
Four in Hand Knot Step 5
Then take this wide end of the tie and pull it through the loop you created on step #3.
Four in Hand Knot Step 6
Give the Four-in-Hand knot some final adjustment, pull it tight, center it between the collars, and flip the collar back down. You are done!

Bow Tie

The Bow Tie Knot is used to tie a bow tie and is worn to give you a formal and elegant appearance. A "black tie occasion" such as a wedding is an event that you would commonly wear a bow tie at, along with a tuxedo.

Bow Tie Step 1
Cross the longer end "B" over the shorter end "A".
Bow Tie Step 2
Pass up longer end "B" and loop through shorter end "A".
Bow Tie Step 3
Form front loop of bow by doubling up shorter end (Hanging) and placing across collar points.
Bow Tie Step 4
Hold this front loop with thumb and forefinger of left hand. Drop long end down over front.
Bow Tie Step 5
Place right forefinger, pointing up on bottom half of hanging part, pass up behind front loop.
Bow Tie Step 6
Poke resulting loop through knot behind front loop
Bow Tie Step 7
Tighten making sure both ends are even.
