A Guide to Christmas in London
From ice skating at Somerset House to watching The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House, Hawes & Curtis selects the capital’s most festive outings.
Ice skating at Somerset House 18th November – 10th January 2015
For an invigorating festive outing, head to the Somerset House ice rink. The grand 18th century courtyard is a stunning location for skating sessions this winter. For an après-skate treat, the Fortnum’s Lodge will offer champagne and afternoon tea. And if you fancy skating after dark, the rink will host some of the best international clubs and festivals at exclusive Club Nights. For more information visit Somerset House
What to wear:
Wear layers when ice skating so that you will be warm on the rink but not too hot when you’re enjoying an after skate drink. A gilet layered over a lambswool jumper and comfortable chinos are ideal. And don’t forget your cashmere lined leather gloves!
Festive afternoon tea at the Café Royal 1st December 2015 - 11th January 2016
Especially for Christmas, the Café Royal has added a sprinkle of magic to its renowned afternoon tea. The London Royal Tea is a humorous take on the traditional British ritual and features edible London icons and classic English treats including scones, sandwiches and cakes. The Café Royal afternoon tea is presented in the gilded splendour of the Oscar Wilde Bar, originally established in 1865 and the place where Oscar Wilde himself dined daily. For more information visit Hotel Cafe Royal
What to wear:
The Café Royal has a dress code which requires gentlemen to wear a jacket. A tie is optional and trainers are not permitted. We recommend a smart blazer, a sharp white shirt and an eye-catching tie styled with flannel trousers and black formal shoes.
The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House 8th December 2015 - 14th January 2016
The great seasonal classic, The Nutcracker, will be brought to life at the Royal Opera House. This magical ballet, danced to Tchaikovsky’s famous score, tells the story about a young girl’s enchanted present that leads her on a wonderful adventure. Peter Wright’s spectacular production is performed by the Royal Ballet and features a breath-taking set inspired by 19th century Christmas images. There’s no strict dress code at the Royal Opera House but this is the perfect opportunity to dress up. Audience members tend to wear smart/ casual outfits such as a velvet smoking jacket, a vibrant shirt and stylish accessories.
