The Original
Jermyn St. Shirtmaker
As the original Jermyn Street shirtmaker since 1913, we are just as passionate about our shirts today as we were more than 100 years ago. Since the first store opened in the Piccadilly Arcade, Hawes & Curtis has been known throughout the world for its exquisite shirts thanks to their superb quality, attention to detail and exquisite craftsmanship.
The Best Shirts
In The World
Jermyn Street at the heart of St James’s is one of London’s most iconic and chic districts. It is famous for its resident shirtmakers and it has a worldwide reputation for high quality British artistry and craftsmanship. For more than a century, Hawes & Curtis has made Jermyn Street shirts for royalty and Hollywood’s elite. Today our flagship store is proudly located on this prestigious street.
The Founder Of
London’s West End
Jermyn Street dates back to 1664 when Henry Jermyn, Earl of St Albans, was granted land from Charles II in an area known as St James’s Field. Henry Jermyn developed St James’s Square which was surrounded by grand houses with four streets leading from it. From the beginning, the development grew into a fashionable address. As a result of his development, Henry Jermyn is regarded as the ‘founder’ of London’s West End.

Distinguished Residents
Jermyn Street has had many renowned residents over the years. Sir Isaac Newton lived on Jermyn Street from 1697 until he moved to Chelsea in 1709. William Blake was baptised at Wren’s Church of St James’s which was considered to be one of the most fashionable churches in London. The author, Sir Walter Scott, and the poet Thomas Gray both resided on the street.
An Exclusive Sojourn
Renowned British cook, Rosa Lewis, purchased the famous Cavendish Hotel on Jermyn Street in 1902 and transformed it into one of the most fashionable private hotels in London. Winston Churchill and the future King Edward VIII were among many of her famous guests. She was known as the ‘Duchess of Jermyn Street’.
A Note From
The Archives
Hawes & Curtis dressed Lord Mountbatten for most of his life and he introduced members of the Royal Family to the brand, including Prince Philip who went on to grant Hawes & Curtis a Royal Warrant of Appointment. On the 20th of December 1920 he wrote a thank you letter to Mr. Curtis: “I want to thank both you and Mr. Hawes for all the trouble you have taken over fitting me out. I am delighted with the results and enclose a cheque to the value of £113.18 for the amount I owe you.”
Royal Warrants
Royal Warrants are highly sought after, and have always been regarded as demonstrating excellence and quality. Hawes & Curtis was very proud to have been awarded four Royal Warrants, as a result of its superior products and commitment to impeccable service. In 1922, HRH the Prince of Wales granted Hawes & Curtis its first Royal Warrant, followed by the Royal Warrant of HRH King George VI in 1938. In 1948 Hawes & Curtis received a third Royal Warrant appointed by HRH King George VI and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh awarded a fourth Royal Warrant in 1957.
Outfitter For
The Aristocracy
Hawes & Curtis is known for having introduced the backless evening waistcoat. Fred Astaire allegedly approached Hawes & Curtis to have one made of his very own, only to be regretfully refused due to the high demand for such garments from the British aristocracy.
