Renowned British cook, Rosa Lewis, purchased the famous Cavendish Hotel on Jermyn Street in 1902 and transformed it into one of the most fashionable private hotels in London. Winston Churchill and the future King Edward VIII were among many of her famous guests. She was known as the ‘Duchess of Jermyn Street’.
A Note From The Archives
Hawes & Curtis dressed Lord Mountbatten for most of his life and he introduced members of the Royal Family to the brand, including Prince Philip who went on to grant Hawes & Curtis a Royal Warrant of Appointment. On the 20th of December 1920 he wrote a thank you letter to Mr. Curtis:
“I want to thank both you and Mr. Hawes for all the trouble you have taken over fitting me out. I am delighted with the results and enclose a cheque to the value of $155.00 for the amount I owe you.”
Royal Warrants
Royal Warrants are highly sought after, and have always been regarded as demonstrating excellence and quality. Hawes & Curtis was very proud to have been awarded four Royal Warrants, as a result of its superior products and commitment to impeccable service. In 1922, HRH the Prince of Wales granted Hawes & Curtis its first Royal Warrant, followed by the Royal Warrant of HRH King George VI in 1938. In 1948 Hawes & Curtis received a third Royal Warrant appointed by HRH King George VI and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh awarded a fourth Royal Warrant in 1957.
